This paper shall give a comprehensive introduction of the Protocol clauses and then analyze its impact on Chinese coal mine methane industry. It shall examine national compliance costs, and compare these costs with those to reduce coal mine methane emissions in China. It shall explore the markets for coal mine methane emission reductions, discuss the various reasons why potential buyers may seek coal mine methane emission reductions, and then project the impact the Protocol will have on coal mine methane projects in China. In addition, the introduction is made on the steps that coal mine operators and methane developers should take to benefit from the emissions reduction markets.

It has some different geometric structures and corresponding application conditions. Compared with traditional vertical wells, when exploring the CBM in low permeability reservoir, the MLHW has the advantages such as high production per well, high degree of reserve recovery and great economic benefits. In this paper, the control factors and production enhancing mechanism are analyzed of the MLHW in developing CBM; the simulated application of the MLHW in Qinshui coal field is also discussed.

(Graduate School of Frontier Science at University of Tokyo, Japan)Abstract: The coal cleat pattern in the Kushiro coalfield, Japan, shows some analogy to isolated straight joints. The characteristics of a coal seam in the Kushiro coalfield and its relevant cleat system are introduced. The influence of confining pressure change and coal cleat on gas permeability is studied by experiments.

Mechanical Sand Fishing Technology in Coalbed Methane Well
Zhang Yonghong, Li Yukui and Ge Dong
(Downhole Special Service Department of Zhongyuan Oilfield, Henan 457061)Abstract: After hydraulic fracturing and start-up of the coal bed gas well, the sand out of the earth can cover the productive seam and thus interrupt the gas production. Based on the low pressure of the coal bed gas well, the sand removal technology by mechanical sand fishing is put forward. This paper presents the sand fishing by tubing carrier and steel line carrier, respectively, which can effectively remove the deposited sand at the bottom of the well and will not bring pollution to the reservoir as well as the ground. By field testing, this technology proves to be of high efficiency and save operation time, so its application and dissemination is recommended in the coal bed gas wells.

(1. Geosciences College at Chengdu University of Technology, Sichuan 610059; 2. Exploration & Production Research Institute at South-West Branch of China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation, Sichuan 610081)Abstract: After the research in more than 20 years and the coalbed gas exploration in some areas, the comparison is made on some regions at home and abroad of coalbed gas exploration and development, showing that the geological conditions of coal bed gas in Yunnan and Guizhou region is featured by the generality as well as its specialty. In this paper, the evaluation principles (standards) that comply with the actual conditions in Yunnan and Guizhou region are adopted for the coal bed gas resources and selected areas, and as a result, six target areas appear to be favorable for exploration.

Methane Control Technologies in Tiefa Mining Area
Li Guojun
(China University of Mining and Technology, Beijing 100083 )Abstract: Due to the low permeability of Tiefa coal field, methane drainage engineering can hardly be carried out in the virgin coal seam, and it can only be conducted to extract desorbed or released methane under the effects of coal mining activity. In order to guide the determination of methane controlling technology, Tiefa Coal Industry Group Ltd. studied the laws of rock mass's movements and transformations and its fracture distribution in the course of mining; the relationship of methane controlling with surrounding strata movement and ventilation was also studied. On the basis of the above studies, the methane controlling technology in Tiefa mining area has made great progress. 15 methods of methane drainage and controlling have been explored and summarized so far, among which several major methods are introduced in this paper.

Yan Wei1, Wang Jinshan1, Jiang Jianhong1, Qu Yanlin2 and Nian Zhonghua3
(1.Heilongjiang Coal Geotechnical Institute, Heilongjiang 150008; 2. Heilongjiang Bureau of Coal Geology, Heilongjiang 150001)Abstract: There are 42 mine wells in four major mine areas, Jixi, Hegang, Shuangyashan and Qitaihe, in Heilongjiang province, China, 70% of which are high gas mine wells. Eight wells have been abandoned so far, and another five wells will be sequentially abandoned by the year 2005. With the wells abandoned, a large amount of gas remaining in the coal seams and tunnels keep leaking to the outside, severely influencing the local environment and polluting the atmosphere. In this paper, the analysis on the conditions of gas drainage and abandoned wells in each mine area shows the bright market prospects for gas drainage and utilization in mine wells in Heilongjiang province.

Experimental Study on Mechanism of Gas Flow in Coal Bed
Ynag Shenghai, Cui Feifei, Yang Sisong and Zhang Suian
( Petroleum and Gas Engineering School at University of Petroleum, Beijing 102249)Abstract: Characteristics of the CBM seepage in coalbed core are studied by experiments, with the impact of factors such as effective press, gas pressure, gas properties and temperature on the CBM permeability investigated. The comparison is made on the seepage of methane in coalbed core, sandstone core and coal powder core. The research indicates that the permeability of coalbed core is greatly affected by the effective press, and its press sensitivity exceeds that of the sandstone core. The simulation shows that in the process of CBM exploitation, the permeability can keep above 70 percents of original permeability, and the flow in coalbed core will be enhanced with the temperature going up.
