"Methane to Markets Partnership" Regional Workshop in China
December 2, 2005
Kunlun Hotel, Beijing, P.R.China
1. Introduction
The Methane to Markets Partnership, announced by US EPA in July 2004, is a multilateral initiative uniting public and private interests to reduce global methane emissions. Participants will focus on cost-effective, near-term methane recovery and use as a clean energy source from three major sources: landfills, underground coal mines, and natural gas and oil systems. By utilizing otherwise-wasted methane, this initiative will produce important benefits, such as reduced greenhouse emissions, enhanced economic growth, energy security, coal mine safety, and improved local air quality.
By 2015, the Partnership has the potential to deliver annual methane emissions reductions of up to 50 million metric tons of carbon equivalent, or recovery of 14.2 billion cubic meters of natural gas. If achieved, these ambitious but attainable and measurable results could lead to stabilized or even declining levels of global atmospheric concentrations of methane.
