¡°The 8th International Symposium on Coalbed Methane/Coal Mine Methane and Carbon Trading in China¡± will be held on December 4, 2008 at Kunlun Hotel in Beijing, China, cosponsored by China State Administration of Coal Mine Safety and US Environmental Protection Agency, organized by China Coal Information Institute.

As an important event in CBM/CMM sector, ¡°The 8th International Symposium on CBM/CMM and Carbon Trading in China¡± has become a platform for promoting CBM/CMM development through strengthening the technical and economic cooperation in CBM/CMM recovery and utilization at home and abroad. The Symposium will provide opportunities for more extensive and direct exchange among Chinese and foreign governmental departments, international financial organizations, and the companies from coal, CBM, petroleum, electricity and geology industries. You and your colleagues are warmly welcome to attend ¡°the 8th International Symposium on Coalbed Methane/Coal Mine Methane and Carbon Trading in China¡±.

Topics of the Symposium

  • Methane to Markets Partnership

  • Policies, regulations and financing issues

  • Potential and prospects of CBM/CMM projects in China

  • Theoretical study on CBM/CMM development

  • New technologies and their application of CBM development

  • Coal mine gas drainage technologies

    • Underground directional horizontal long borehole

    • Gob well drainage

  • CBM/CMM utilization technologies

    • Civil utilization

International Workshop on Mine Methane Emission Reduction in China

5th December 2008

Organizers:

The International Workshop on Mine Methane Emission Reduction will be held on 5th   December, 2008 at Kunlun Hotel in Beijing, China, in conjunction with the 8th International Symposium on CBM/CMM and Carbon Trading in China on 4th December 2008.

China is the biggest coal producer in the world with annual coal output of 2.35 billion tonnes in 2006. China is also the world¡¯s largest coal consumer, with coal accounting for approximately 70% of China's total energy consumption. The volume of explored coal mine methane resource appears to be around 35 trillion m3, which is equal to the natural gas reserve in China. Recent statistics suggest that Chinese coal mines emit up to 13 billion m3 of methane into the atmosphere annually, and China is responsible for about 45% of the total global ventilation air methane emissions. It is estimated that over 70-80% of the drainage gas has a methane concentration of less than 30%, which can not be used by conventional gas utilisation technologies.

A series of invited presentations at the workshop will address:

  • Coal mine resource and methane emission characteristics in China,

  • Advanced gas capture/drainage technology,

  • Methane emission prediction,

  • Potential of dilute methane mitigation and utilisation in China,

  • Advanced dilute methane mitigation and utilisation technologies,

  • Related Chinese regulations,

  • Project finance, and

  • Clean Development Mechanism.

  • Study results from three major research projects funded by the Australia-China Bilateral Climate Change Partnership will be included in the relevant presentations.

The workshop will be a platform for promoting development in CMM/VAM recovery and utilisation through direct exchanges among the delegates, and will provide a valuable information-sharing opportunity for industrial stakeholders, governmental policy makers, and financial organisations etc.

Registration

Registration to attend the workshop is free to delegates. The presentation materials, reception, working lunch and workshop dinner will be provided during the workshop. Delegates will bear their own expenses for travel, accommodation etc. Please complete and return the attached Registration Form to the Organizing Committee by email or fax by November 1, 2008. Please note that places are limited.
